Let´s Buy Happiness is a Newcastle band formed by Sarah Hall (vocals), James Hall (guitar/keys), Graeme Martin (guitars), Mark Brown (bass) and James King (drums). The self-released No Hot Ashes EP garnered much local and national attention and with their self-released singles Six Wolves, Fast Fast and Dirty Lakes, the band have twice been invited to Maida Vale Studios in London for both BBC Radio 6 and Radio 1.
Dirty Lakes was also included on Spotify's "Songs of 2011" list, showcasing all the best music during that term.Within a year of playing their debut show in a small Newcastle pub, the band were invited by Michael Eavis to perform at Glastonbury 2010 on the John Peel stage alongside Foals, Florence and the Machine, Mumford and Sons and The XX.
This year they will be representing the region at the annual South By South West convention in Austin, Texas, before heading to Toronto for Canadian Music Week, and currently they are wrapping up their debut album, 'Chants For Friends'.
Fridöm interviewed Sarah Hall / vocals-Let´s Buy Happiness, about their hobbies, their plans, their favorite song, etc...Check it out:
Fridöm: How would you describe “Let’s Buy Happiness” as a band?
I'd say our sound is atmospheric / dark / melancholic. Our new songs are heavier in a lot of places.
Fridöm: If you could choose any place in the world to give a concert, which place would it be?
We’d love to play everywhere. That’s one of our major goals, and we’ve been receiving a lot of support from Mexico and would love to come and play there too.
Fridöm: We can´t stop listening to “Works Better On Paper”, what´s the story behind the song?
It’s about a relationship that every time you think it’ll work out, it falls apart because the people work better together in theory than when they’re actually together.
Fridöm: What´s your favorite song of Let’s Buy Happiness and why?
We all have different favorites and mine changes daily to be honest. But today I would say my favorite is a new song that we’ve just recorded for our debut album. The songs called ‘Sickly Sights’. It’s about a person becoming aware of all of wrongs within our society and about growing out of ignorance
Fridöm: You´ve been on the road for a while, could you tell us what things you usually do to survive the long trips while on the road?
I read, I draw, listen to music. I try to write new lyrics as well. Mark (bassist) reads and sleeps the most. Graeme (guitarist) always brings a bag of food. Kingy (drummer) listens to music and has an on-the-road playlist which consists of a lot of Thin Lizzy; and James (guitarist) is on his laptop a lot. The majority of our time on the road is spent talking, and joking together.
Fridöm: What’s the best experience that has happened to you while touring?
Playing during sundown on top of a mountain in Castelbasso, Italy
Fridöm: Complete the next sentences:
Freedom is a right
Inspiration happens when you’re moved
Happiness is different depending on the person
Fridöm: And finally, are you planning to visit Latin America any time soon?
We’d love to, depending on the success of our debut album we’ll be over there in a shot.
