Citizens! is a fantastic London based indie-pop band formed by Tom Burke, Lawrence Diamond, Mike Evans, Martyn Richmond and Thom Rhoades who released their debut album Here We Are last year, which was produced by Alex Kapranos from Franz Ferdinand. A good and fresh pop for our ears. Fridöm talked with Lawrence Diamond (keyboards) about their album, places to visit in London, the soundtrack for their own film, among other things ...
I’m Lawrence Diamond, I play keyboards and a bit of guitar in CITIZENS! I’m from London and my favorite member of The Beatles is George Harrison. We all met at a house party in London a couple of years ago. The party had reached that late stage where most people have paired off and gone home with someone and there we were all fighting over whether we should play Martin Rev or Kanye West on the stereo. We decided it might be cooler to form a band and try and mix these influences than to stand around, alone, at house parties, fighting over them.
Tom: Sockless Mike:Moustachioed Martyn: Mackem Thom: Deceiptively Tall (I know that’s two)
It’s a call to arms, a mark in the sand, a rallying point in the fight against ugly pop.
It was an amazing experience. We decamped to Scotland away from prying eyes and just spent two months creating and crafting our sound. We recorded the album before we’d really played live, so with Alex we just constantly challenged ourselves everyday to shape the band and find our sound definitively. He’s also a great cook, so we had some of the best meals of our lives. One particular curry stands out as hands down the best I’ve ever had.
Mexico is probably the country we’ve talked about visiting most. The response from fans there on our twitter and website has been incredible and we’re just desperate to come over and play for them. Our live shows are a cornucopia of sound, movement and noise that normally ends up with at least one person passed out from euphoria and two others pregnant. Immaculate Conception has been known to occur at CITIZENS! gigs.
In no particular order...Primrose Hill, Brick Lane, Hampsted Heath, Richmond Park, Soho, Waterloo Bridge, Waterloo Sunset, Borough Market, Monmouth Coffee Shop, buy Lawrence dinner.
There have been a lot of stage invasions, particularly in France. It’s always girls too. You just see their boyfriends giving us the evils. I’m like, “Get up here with us” we’re an equal opportunities band. Boys should be more willing to come and dance on stage and get naked with us.
Bowie’s- Sound and Vision. That could be the opening shot, maybe as we headline Glastonbury. You see us playing our songs and then all these guys running on and taking their shirts off.
Kanye -West’s Monster could be at the start as we’re having some massive Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon esque fight over the stereo. Martyn flys over the kitchen table and kicks Mike in the back of the head just as he’s putting on Flamings Lips- Yoshimi.....
Martin Rev’s -Mari would be used over the montage footage that shows us writing our first songs, then rehearsing and then exploding on to the world stage dressed as giant Panda’s. It’s a movie that takes liberties with the truth.
Latin America…Best gigs of our lives
