Portugal. The Man is a band from Wasilla, Alaska conformed by John Gourley, Noah Gersh, Kyle O´Quin, Kane Ritchotte and Zachary Carothers. Is one of the bands that were part of the first Indio Emergente festival in Queretaro, Guadalajara and Cholula in Mexico.
Fridöm had the chance to talk with Zachary Carothers, who gave us his impressions about Mexico, their latest album, etc...
Fridöm: Hi Zach, welcome to Cholula, How do you feel about being in Mexico and what has been your impression so far?
Zach: Is the first time we play in Mexico, we always have received a lot of interest from our fans to play over here, is our first time and we couldn´t be happier. This place ( Cholula) is a great place, we had time to walk around and is awesome.
Fridöm: And, what about the fans, very different from one place to another?
Zach: Yes, and is great, in every show we like to talk and meet new people, and these days have been great, we haven´t slept much, we have had long nights since we arrived, but we are enjoying it!!
Fridöm: This is your last show in Mexico, how different are your shows from one city to another?
Zach: Every show is different, yesterday we played and we were partying late, so we never know what will happen. However, I have the feeling that since this will be the last show and with this view of the Cholula pyramids, it will be a very special show.
Fridöm: You must hear this question, quite a lot, however for all those people that do not know, could you tell us where does the name Portugal. The Man comes from?
Zach: It does not have to do anything with Portugal, the country, even though we love that country, so I´ll explain:
I do love the country, we had the opportunity to play with Peaches and Nine Inch Nails and is a very interesting country, the name however comes from the idea of creating a fictional character, a country has a name that represents a group of people, like David Bowie who had Ziggy Stardust, as we are not one person, but a group, we took the name of a country as our alter ego.
Fridöm: Last year, you released your album and we have seen that usually you have a new album each year, can we expect the new album for Portugal. The Man for next year?
Zach: Except this year, this album took us longer, and we realized that sometimes the people you want to work with is not always available, so we have to schedule our times to the people we are workig with. For our new material we are taking longer, but we are close, almost ready...
Fridöm: Your video “ All Your light” was directed by Dan Brown, how was the experience?
Zach: Was really good, actually is the first time that we did not participate directly and we let the director to do what he had planned, we generally participate in all the process and concepts, but this time was different and we enjoyed the result.
Fridöm: You are band that is always on the road and touring, what do you like to do, do you have any hobbies?
Zach: I take pictures, and usually our hobbies are part of the band, is very linked to what we do. For example I am the band´s photographer, is work but it makes me happy. For example, here we haven´t had the time we´d like to because we are very busy, however sometimes you get time to take pictures and walk around.
Fridöm: We read somewhere, that your last album was recorded in El Paso, Texas?
Zach: Yes, in the border with Mexico, is 35 miles east from El Paso, it is called Tornillo. It is a beautiful place, and the studio is my favorite one. I love the vibe of that place and that part of the country. Unfortunately, that time we did not crossed to Mexico, we did not have the time to do it.
Fridöm: And you also recorded in London, San Diego...?
Zach: Yes, but we did not go to London, that was the plan, so we just recorded in El Paso, New York, San Diego and in our basement in Portland and Seattle, we were everywhere. That album was a bit exhausting, it took me almost 10 years of my life ( laughs), was very stressful as we couldn´t get to where we wanted, BUT I loved it, this is what it is about and all the suffering had its rewards and the result of a good album.
Fridöm: After this tour, what are your plans?
Zach: We will take holidays with the band, all the team will come and we will go to Cancun, so I am very excited, it will be fun. I will get some tan before going back to Alaska ( laughs).
Fridöm: Thanks Zach for the interview and hope you enjoy your time in Mexico and the show in Cholula.
Zach: Thanks to you and hope you enjoy the concert, and see you later at the after-show.
